For this bespoke sapphire engagement ring, the design began with the perfect centre stone. Our client had always envisioned an oval sapphire and diamond cluster ring, so finding exactly the right sapphire was the defining first step of the journey.

Simon sourced an exceptional selection of predominantly Sri Lankan sapphires, each chosen for their individuality, colour and character. The winning sapphire immediately stood apart for its vivid blue tone, remarkable brightness and elegant oval proportions. Richly saturated yet still full of life and movement, the stone displays flashes of electric blue alongside softer velvety tones depending on the light, giving it a beautifully balanced and captivating appearance.

Once the sapphire had been selected, the focus shifted towards refining the design. Our client loved the idea of proportionally sized diamonds surrounding the centre stone to create a timeless oval cluster silhouette. Particular attention was paid to achieving the right balance between sapphire and diamond, ensuring the centre stone remained dominant while the surrounding brilliant-cut diamonds enhanced its colour and brilliance.

The sizing and arrangement of the diamonds was carefully considered to maintain as much of a true oval outline as possible, avoiding excessive scalloping around the edges. The claw placement and overall setting design were also thoughtfully refined to create a softer, more elegant flow while still allowing maximum light into the gemstones.

Crafted in platinum, the finished ring feels timeless, refined and full of character. The crisp white metal provides a beautiful contrast against the vivid blue sapphire, while the diamond-set shoulders add further light and delicacy to the design without distracting from the centre stone. Viewed from the side, the open gallery beneath the cluster allows additional light to pass through the sapphire while giving the ring a graceful architectural profile.
