This bespoke old cut diamond dress ring was designed as a meaningful modern heirloom remodel, transforming a treasured family diamond into a piece that could be worn and enjoyed in everyday life. The centre stone was inherited from the client’s mother, originally set within a necklace. While the diamond held deep sentimental value, the client wished to redesign how it was worn, allowing the stone to take on a new form while still honouring its history.
The brief focused on creating a refined dress ring that felt elegant, timeless, and rooted in traditional jewellery design rather than overtly modern styling. Although the diamond itself is round, the client was drawn to the softer geometry of a cushion-shaped outline. To achieve this, we designed a delicately proportioned diamond halo that subtly reshapes the visual silhouette of the stone, giving the ring a cushion-like presence while allowing the old cut diamond to remain the true focal point.
Old cut diamonds possess a distinctive character that differs greatly from modern brilliant cuts. Their broader facets, gentle symmetry, and warm light return give them an unmistakable charm. This design was intentionally created to complement those qualities. Rather than forcing the diamond into a contemporary setting, the ring embraces an aesthetic found in historic jewellery, allowing the stone’s natural personality to shine.
The split shoulder band became a key architectural feature of the ring. As the shoulders divide and taper towards the halo, they introduce lightness and movement while drawing attention back to the centre stone. The split shoulders are set with carefully matched diamonds, adding depth, sparkle, and refinement without overwhelming the design. From the side profile, the ring reveals further detail, showcasing thoughtful craftsmanship and balanced proportions.
This dress ring is a beautiful example of heirloom remodelling done with sensitivity and intention. It demonstrates how non-modern stone cuts, particularly old cut diamonds, can be reimagined in a way that feels both timeless and wearable. The client was closely involved throughout the bespoke process, and the result exceeded expectations. The piece allows her to wear her mother’s diamond in a completely new way, while preserving its emotional significance.
The finished ring is elegant, considered, and deeply personal – a modern heirloom rooted in history, designed to be loved for generations to come.
