W&W Jewellery’s Insight: The Appeal of Lab-Grown Diamonds

Lab-grown diamonds have sparked a lot of conversation lately. At W&W Jewellery, we have thoroughly explored this trend to offer you a well-rounded perspective on their place in the fine jewellery world. Keep reading for our insight into the pros and cons of choosing lab-grown…

Looking Closer

At W&W, we know that choosing the right diamond for your bespoke jewellery creation goes beyond numbers and technicalities. However, one thing is for sure, lab-grown or natural, every diamond deserves to be seen up close to appreciate its full beauty.

Chemically lab-grown diamonds are technically identical to natural diamonds, but they are created in a different environment and that can mean slight distinctions in how they reflect and refract light when compared to natural stones. Diamond reports provide key information about each stone, but they can’t capture this subtlety or the emotional experience of choosing the right diamond for your bespoke jewellery design.

Whatever type of diamond you opt for, we are firm believers a diamond should be viewed in person to determine exactly the right stone for you and the special piece of fine jewellery you want to create.

Sustainability Matters

The term “lab-grown” might suggest a more sustainable choice, but the reality is a bit more nuanced. Lab-grown diamonds are produced in factories using an energy-intensive process, and many are made in India, where fossil fuels account for over 75% of all energy production.

At W&W, we are passionate about sustainability and work closely with suppliers to offer our clients the right choice of natural diamonds, gemstones, and lab-grown diamonds. Those choices can include sustainable lab-grown diamonds, where producers have an appropriate accreditation from independent assessors, alongside equivalent or comparable natural diamonds so you can make an informed decision that aligns with your values.

Considering Value

You may come across comparisons that position lab-grown diamonds as a more affordable option. They certainly do cost less than natural diamonds, but these two markets are distinct and direct comparison is problematic. At the time of writing, the value of lab-grown diamonds is falling with mass production of new stones removing demand for a secondary or resale market. This means lab-grown diamonds may not retain any value in the longer term. However, if you are working within a budget and dream of a larger stone, they can be a legitimate choice.
