At W&W Jewellery, we believe that inspiration for bespoke jewellery design can be found in the most unexpected places. Recently, our jewellery designer, Narell, embarked on a creative journey that beautifully illustrates this philosophy.
Narell discovered an opportunity to participate in the Creative Inspiration Workshop at St Bartholomew’s Hospital after receiving an email invitation from the Goldsmith’s Centre. Excited by the chance to explore historic craftsmanship, she booked a spot for this unique experience, which combined a conservation tour with a Baroque-inspired drawing session.
As she walked towards St Bart’s, she moved through a landscape of towering modern buildings before stepping into a world steeped in history. The contrast was striking – leaving behind contemporary glass and steel to immerse herself in the rich artistry of the past.
The tour, led by Barts Heritage, took Narell through the hospital’s storied halls. She was particularly captivated by the Hogarth Stair, an artistic masterpiece adorned with William Hogarth’s dramatic paintings. Witnessing the ongoing restoration of the ceiling in the Great Hall, crafted by Swiss-Italian plasterer Jean Baptiste St Michele, deepened her appreciation for intricate design and historic conservation.
Following the tour, Narell joined artist James Willis for a drawing workshop on the viewing deck. Used to precise sketching when designing bespoke jewellery, she found working with graphite a refreshing contrast. The technique required a loose hand and shoulder, creating bold, flowing shapes with thick graphite layers, blending lines by hand for softer tones and shadows. The experience opened her mind to more decorative, fluid lines in her jewellery designs – an exciting prospect for future commissions, should a client be open to it.
This creative day out has influenced Narell’s approach to custom jewellery design, sparking ideas that blend classical artistry with modern craftsmanship.
At W&W Jewellery, we are passionate about designing unique jewellery that tells a story, ensuring each custom piece we create is infused with inspiration from the world around us.
