Blue Topaz Bespoke Engagement Ring

Creating a bespoke engagement ring can feel daunting when it is your first experience of fine jewellery. For this commission, our client Marcus came to us looking to propose to his partner with something completely individual.

Prior to our meeting he had gathered guidance on colours, gemstone shapes, setting styles and, importantly, a few definite likes and dislikes. Rather than limiting the possibilities, these details gave us a wonderful starting point from which to explore possibilities for the ring’s design.

Coloured gemstones quickly became central to the process. We sourced a striking selection of stones in different colours and proportions, gradually narrowing the search towards two particularly exciting possibilities: richly coloured purple amethysts and vivid Swiss blue topaz.

The winning stone was an extraordinary octagonal-cut Swiss blue topaz. Bold in scale and intensely blue, its clean geometric shape gave the ring an immediate sense of character. With the centre stone chosen, we could refine the design around it, creating a setting that celebrated the topaz while incorporating another detail with personal significance.

Set in yellow gold, the blue topaz is held by four sculptural corner claws, allowing the crisp outline and generous proportions of the stone to remain beautifully visible. The warmth of the yellow gold provides a striking contrast against the electric blue of the topaz, while the simplicity of the band keeps the magnificent centre stone firmly in focus.

The real surprise, however, reveals itself from the side. Small green peridots are set into the gallery beneath the topaz, introducing a subtle flash of contrasting colour and another layer of meaning to the design. Almost hidden when the ring is viewed from above, they are a detail to be discovered and one that makes the finished engagement ring even more personal to its wearer.

Throughout the commission, we guided Marcus through different gemstone options, settings and the practical considerations behind each decision, allowing him to make his choices with confidence while keeping his timescale and budget in mind.

When he collected the finished bespoke topaz engagement ring, it felt as though everything had come together: an extraordinary blue gemstone, a design created specifically for his partner and, most importantly, a ring he felt completely confident proposing with.
