Sapphire and Diamond Custom Bombe Ring
Created to celebrate a significant wedding anniversary, this sapphire and diamond custom bombe ring is a wonderful example of jewellery that feels both bold and effortlessly elegant. Our client initially visited the studio with the idea of creating a pearl ring, but as we explored different possibilities together, the conversation naturally returned to the piece she had always imagined owning: a beautifully proportioned sapphire ring that she could wear and enjoy every day.
From the outset, the overall direction was clear. She was drawn to the timeless appeal of a bombe ring, favouring generous curves, smooth flowing surfaces and a reassuring sense of weight. Rather than intricate detailing, the planned design would rely on beautifully balanced proportions, exceptional gemstones and flawless craftsmanship to make its statement.
To begin the journey, Simon carefully sourced a selection of exceptional natural sapphires, each chosen for its colour, brilliance and character. Seeing the gemstones side by side allowed us to explore subtle differences in tone and proportion before selecting the stone that felt exactly right. Alongside this, we refined the size and balance of the accompanying brilliant-cut diamonds until the composition achieved a harmonious relationship between all three.
With the gemstones chosen, Narell developed a series of bespoke design concepts, exploring proportions, shoulder profiles and the gentle transitions that define a truly elegant bombe ring. Small refinements throughout the design process helped create a ring that feels substantial without being heavy, allowing every curve to flow naturally around the finger.
Before committing to the final piece, we produced a full-scale resin model so our client could experience the ring’s presence, comfort and proportions in person. That final fitting confirmed every decision and gave confidence before the piece moved into production.
The finished ring is made in rich 18ct yellow gold, with the vivid blue sapphire sitting proudly at the centre in a refined flush setting. Two brilliant-cut diamonds provide balance and brilliance. Sculptural gold softly wraps around each gemstone to create a design that feels contemporary yet timeless. The polished surface catches the light beautifully, enhancing the sapphire’s depth of colour and allowing the diamonds to add flashes of sparkle without competing for attention.
